Regional Study in Americas about Women’s Rights

A majority of Latin American women believe that their rights are not respected.

The survey was conducted by WIN in December 2017 in 11 countries representing 87% of the American continent's population: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Paraguay and the United States. A total of 5,982 surveys were conducted among women over the age of 17, and in Argentina it was conducted by Voices! The study shows that there is still a long way to go in terms of women's rights.

Some findings from the study:

  • Almost 6 out of 10 women surveyed considered that women’s rights are 'little or nothing' respected (56%), while on the contrary, 44% thought that they are 'much or enough' respected.
  • While for the great majority of North Americans (84%) their rights are respected much or enough, this proportion falls to 36% in Latin America.
  • 23% of the women surveyed stated that they had suffered some form of gender-based violence, either physical and/or psychological.
  • Argentina, Chile, Peru and Mexico are the countries where the highest proportions of women admit having been raped in some way (30%).
